1.Content and structure
1.Genre
It?s a dramatic novel with a bit of humour.
2.Point of view
The writer used an I-narrator inside the story. So you can fallow the story through the eyes of the main person. This makes it more emotional and you can better understand what the I-narrator feels and means.
3.Characters
-The main character is Patrick Clarke but his friends call him Paddy. His father is also named Patrick. He is a 10-year-old boy who really wand to reach something in his life. He always wand to know everything. That makes him a smart boy. He is doing all kinds of things that are prohibited. He really likes his family and he doesn?t want something to go wrong with his family members. He has the same character thought the story.
- Paddy is an example of a round character
- The mother of Paddy is an example of a flat character. She is always lovely but sometimes she is mad.
4.Relationships
-Two of Paddy?s best friends are Liam and Aidan. There are two brothers. . Mostly they are playing together. Some kids make jokes about the brothers, about they have no mother any more. Paddy finds this very sad and he tries to say nothing about it.
-They stay friends during the story but that does not include the end. Paddy wand to be alone and Liam and Aidan are doing the same as the other kids and hate Paddy.
5.Time
The story is told non-chronologically, with flashbacks.
I think the narrated time is about one year.
6.Space
The story is situated in Ireland. It?s almost always situated in the same street. In that street all the houses look the same. This area is more situated in the countryside I think.
7.Ending
no happy ending: Paddy?s father is moving away
8.Theme
It?s a dramatic story but it?s also funny. Sometimes Paddy thinks in a very weird way. He has his own vision at the world. He has a big imagination. This results in humorous situations. On the other side the story is a bit dramatic. The story could happen in real life. There are a lot of family problems in the story. Some kids have no mother or father anymore, have divorced parents and other problems. That makes the book also a bit sad.
2.Content and reality
9.Does the author criticize our society?
Yes, there is too much hypocrisy in the world.
10. Social environment
Middle classes
3.Evaluation
11.Purpose of the book
Entertainment, make the reader think about a problem
12. Could you empathize or sympathize with any character?
Yes, with Paddy. He want to run away from home because his parents are arguing all the time. This is a normal reaction for a boy his age.
13.I thought the book was
quite good
-The worst thing was that there were no chapters.
-There were a lot of jokes in the book and I liked them. It wasn?t difficult to read because it was written in a simple English language.
