Short summary
The book tells about a boy, Tom Sawyer. One day he gets punishment, because he looks awful. His punishment is painting the fence near their house. However Tom is so clever to let other persons painted. First comes his friend Ben Rogers, who paints a part of the fence. Then comes Billy Fischer, an other friend, who paints also a part. The next person, who paints a part of the fence, is Johnny Miller. And so was there always a person, who paints, so that Tom didn't have to paint.
Some other day Tom met Huckleberry Finn. They became friends. They played together everywhere at the village.
One night, they went to the graveyard. There they saw three shades: These appear to be Muff Potter, Indian Joe and Doctor Robinson. There creates a battle among Dr. Robinson and Indian Joe+ Muff Potter. Doctor Robinson dies with the knife of Muff Potter. The person, who kills Doctor Robinson, was Indian Joe and the person, who gets the blame, was Muff Potter.
When the lawsuit begins, the jury gets more and more the conviction, that Muff Potter is the murderer, until Tom takes action as witness in the defence of Muff. He tells very detailed what he has seen on the graveyard. Muff Potter becomes acquitted. Only Tom isn't his life sure.
Finally, Indian Joe dies, because he is locked at a cave.
Theme
The theme, which runs as a red thread through the story, is the avoiding of Indian Joe through Tom.
The textpart, which is typical for the theme, is the textpart from the textpart with the lawsuit until the end.
The connection among the title and the story is that the title tells who is the principal person at the story.
Review
I like this book very much, because the book tells about a boy, who lives to see a lot of adventures. These adventures are described very well through the author.
A very well described passage, I like, is the passage in which doctor Robinson gets killed. I like this, because it is described so well, that you can see it happen in your mind.
I like, the theme is described very well. It is a very recognisable theme.
I can this book compare with the Dutch book. Further I can compare it with a comic, that was to see on television at the television transmitter KINDERNET, a few years ago. I can remember some passages of the comic.
My end-opinion is, that the book is sure a must.
