2a) Why did you choose this book ?
We have to choose a book that was given on the stencil. I was in the library to look for a book.
And I choose the nicest one, that most appeals to me.
b) What was your first personal reaction after you read this book?
It was a lovely and a sad book, because 2 people fall in love at the beginning of this book and in the mean while it was war and at the end of the book the woman died with her baby and the man was all alone again.
3a) Summary.
It?s about a man called henry Tenente
He works at an ambulance in the army
One day Rinaldi and Tenente went to miss Barkely, she told them about a friend who died in the war.
Later they went away but the next day henry was meeting miss Barkley at her job in the hospital.
He tried to kiss her.
Then he went back to the villa and henry visited her several times.
Then miss Barkley gave him a necklace called saint Anthony and then she had to go
In the mean while there was a war going on and they waited until it was dark so they could attack
And the bombing started.
Bombs were flying around and Passini was hit and he died right after that
Gordini had a wound on his head and shoulder so they took him and Tenente away.
Tenente was in the dressingroom where they helped him with his leg. A trench mortar shell hit them.
Rinaldi visited him later and was teasing him a little, after that he went to pick up Barkely
Tenente was transferred to the American hospital in Milan.
Once they arrived?
The doctor was looking at his leg and he said that he should wait 6 months to operate his knee safely.
Henry couldn?t wait 6 months so he asked for another surgeon.
Dr valentine operates him early in the morning
Catherine Barkely stayed the whole night with him
Henry en Catherine wanted to get married but they couldn?t because they will send her home and they would be apart until after the war.
A little while later?his knee was almost healed.
In September the war was over
Henry was still in the hospital
Catherine came to visit him and told him she was pregnant for 3 months she told him he was the father of her baby.
She stayed for a little while and then she went away
Henry is now ill for 2 weeks he has jaundice.
A nurse came into his room and found the cognac bottles.(he was drinking in the hospital secretly)so he couldn?t go back to the front.
Finally he goes to the front again and he said goodbye to the hospital.
He went down to the corner where was a wine shop and waited inside looking out the window for Catherine.
They took a walk and he bought a pistol.
They went to a hotel in front of the station.
They had something to eat and drunk a little and then he said goodbye to her. And went into the train.
Once he arrived at his destination?
He went to his room en later Rinaldi came in and he was teasing him for 2 years but he liked it.
Henry, Rinaldi and the priest talked about the war.
The bombing started again and there was an attack, but it was unsuccessful.
Bonelli, Piani and Henry went with the truck to Udine.
Later they were on a road that led to a river.
Along the river bank there was nothing and no one but the wet brush and muddy ground.
Finally they saw the railway bridge.
Few miles away they heard the firing.
A shot was fired at them but the bullet went into the mud of the embankment.
A shot was fired and amino was shot.
They thought it were Germans but now they think that they are Italians
They were questioning and they heard shots en henry ran away and they thought he drowned
He dropped of the train in Milan.
He?s going to the hospital to look for miss Barkley, but she went to Stresa
Henry has been away from the bloody front.
He took the train to Stresa.
Try to find Catherine and Helen Ferguson.
Then he saw them in their hotel eating supper.
Catherine was really happy to see him.
They went to the hotel room without Ferguson.
He told her that he was deserted from the army.
A few days later Emilio came to Tenente and said that he is in trouble because he will be arrested in the morning, because Emilio was out in the town and heard them talking in a cafe.
Catherine and henry packed their bags, and then walked down the hall with the barman (Emilio).
They went to the lake where the barman?s boat lays.
The barman told him how he had to go to Switzerland
Finally arrived in Switzerland they went to get something to eat
And then they went back to the boat and a soldier was standing guard over the boat.
Then the soldier took them with him and they were questioned
And then they went to Locarno and stayed in a hotel nearby Montreux
Barkley is having a baby and they get married when she is thin again.
They have a lovely time together but then she had to go to the hospital because she was going into labour but the baby didn?t come out so they had to do a caesarean operation. But the baby was born dead
And later the women died, because she had bleedings and henry was all alone again.
3b) 1 Style of writing
The book has long sentences and sometimes it is hard to understand.
There are some conversations between 2 people in this book for example: the conversation between Catherine and Henry. They talk to each other and they are saying sweet words too each other so you know that they really love each other.

2 What do you know about the writer?and what about the time he wrote his novels. Hemingway was born in 1899.his father was a doctor and he was the second of 6 childeren.Their home was at Oak Park,a Chicago suburb.
In 1917 Hemingway joined the Kansas City Star as a cub reporter.
The following year he volunteered to work as an ambulance driver on the italian front where he was badly wounded but twice decorated for his services. He returned to America in 1919 and married in 1921.
In 1922 he reported on the Greco-Turkish war then 2 years later resigned from journalism to devote himself to fiction.
He settled in Paris where he renewed his earlier friendship with such fellow-American expatriates as Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein.
Their encouragement and criticism were to play a valuable part in the formation of his style.
Hemingway?s first 2 published works were: Three Stories and 10 Poems and In Our Time but it was the satirical novel, The Torrents of Spring, which established his name more widely.
His international reputation was firmly secured by his next 3 books: Fiesta, Men Without Woman and A Farewell to Arms.
He was passionately involved with bullfighting, big game hunting and deep-sea fishing, and his writing reflected this.
He visited Spain during the Civil war and described his experiences in the best-seller, For Whom the Bell Tolls.
His direct and deceptively simple style of writing spawned generations of imitators but no equals.
Recognition of his position in contemporary literature came in 1954 when he was awarded the Nobel Prize, following the publication of The Old Man and the Sea.
Ernest Hemingway died in 1961.
