Nowadays people talk about it very often: children how are easily distracted, children that fight, that have difficulties playing quietly, learning disorders?these are all symptoms of one specific disease, maybe someone knows the name? ADHD!
Our article is about ADHD, this stands for attention deficit hyperactive disorder. We chose this text, because it is related to the studies we?ll begin next year, I?ll do pedagogy, and sara does psychology.
A lot of parents feel guilty because they think that there children have this kind of behaviour, because of the education they are given. But it?s false to think that. But if the education is not the reason , what does causes ADHD?
In the article four main causes are mentioned. Environmental agents, brain injury, food additives and sugar and genetics.
Environmental agents are influences from the surroundings of the child. If the mother during her pregnancy drinks excessively alcohol, or if she smokes, she increases the risk that her baby will have ADHD.
An other environmental factor is lead. If there is found a lot of lead in the body of the child, the risk at ADHD is higher. Lead used to be used in paint and old buildings, but nowadays that is no longer allowed, so that the chances that a child is exposed to toxic levels of lead are small.
The next cause is brain injury. It?s proven that children that have suffered a traumatic brain injury from an accident, have a higher risk to get ADHD. But for only a small percentage of the children with ADHD, brain injury is the main cause.
It?s also suggested that attention disorders are caused by refined sugar and food additives, or that they at least aggravate the symptoms.
On the other hand, diet restrictions only help 5 percent of children with ADHD, mostly the ones that have food allergies.
Several studies have showed that sugar doesn?t have an effect on the symptoms of ADHD, but that it are the parents how believe that it does.
The final cause of ADHD are genetics. Attention disorders often run in families, so there are likely to be genetic influences. Studies have shown that 25 percent of the close relatives of families which have ADHD, have children with ADHD.
Recent studies on the subject of ADHD have revealed that in particular regions of the brain of children with ADHD there is a 3 to 4 percent smaller brain volume then with normal children. Those specific regions are used for solving problems, understanding behaviour of others and restraining there impulses, and these 3 are aspects with which children with ADHD have the most difficulties.
Other research has shown that the children that had taken medication had an identical brain volume in those specific regions as the normal children. Which proves the positive effect of the medication.
This new method in which we look at the brain volume, is only for research, and is not yet used for the identification of ADHD.
That?s it! Are there any questions?
