A few seconds later he arrives and introduces himself as Dr. Mortimer. He wants the help of Holmes and W------atson because there is a mystery concerning the death of Charles Baskerville. Mortimer has an 18 century manuscript about a man named Hugo Baskerville, who was an evil man. Hugo fell in love with a girl from the village but she did not see anything in him. So one night Hugo and some friends rode to the house where she lived with her father. Her father was out and Hugo broke in and kidnapped the girl. But when Hugo was home drinking with his friends she broke lose and ran home across the moor. They chased h-er and then Hugo was out of sight of the others. -They heard a terrible cry and then they saw the body of the girl and Hugo. His throat was ripped out by a gigantic hound. Hugo’s friends saw this and panicked. They ran off with their horses. And the Baskerville family has been cursed ever since said Dr Mortimer. "And I am here because Charles Baskerville has been found dead near his house but no signs of violence were found on his body but I found some enormous footprints of a hound a few yards away from the body." Holmes laughs about Dr. Mortimer’s suspicions . But Mortimer continues with his story. He tells Holmes that Charles’ inheritor - Sir Henry Baskerville- is coming to London from Canada to meet Mortimer. The next morning Mortimer and Henry come to have a cup of tea with Watson and Holmes. Mortimer says that they have received a letter with a warning that says to keep away from the moor. And some new boots of Henry are missing in the hotel. After Henry and Mortimer leave, Holmes and Watson walk behind them to look if anyone is following Henry and Mortimer. A cab is following them. Holmes runs next to the cab and sees a man with a beard who then drives off.- Holmes makes arrangements to meet Henry and Mortimer in the hotel where they are staying. In the afternoon they are all sitting round a table and Henry tells that one of his old boots is missing too. Holmes asks when they are going to Baskerville Hall and Henry answers:" Next week." Holmes says that he must not go alone and that Watson will accompany him. Then Henry sees his missing new boots under a table and says that he has checked every inch of the room and they weren’t there then. These are strange mysteries. Holmes and Watson go home and Holmes thinks about everything but cannot solve these mysteries yet. The next day Watson goes with Henry and Mortimer to Devon. Holmes says he will stay in London to work on another case. Watson will send a letter every week to Holmes. When they come to the big house Henry has inherited, they see a few guards because there is a criminal who has escaped from the jail across the moor. It is Seldon, the murderer. They--- are welcomed by Barrymore and his wife. The Barrymores have been the servants of the Baskervilles for centuries now. That evening while Watson is trying to sleep he hears a woman cry. Watson thinks that Barrymore and his wife are acting suspiciously and one night he and Henry see Barrymore signalling to the moor and there is a signal back from the moor. Then Watson and Henry go to Barrymore and ask to whom he was signalling His wife comes and -tells the whole story. That her brother is Selden and that he came half dead to Baskerville Hall for help. She could not refuse him and had ever since given him food and clothes, hoping he would leave. But Holmes explains that he did not want the suspect to know that he was examining the case. Then he explains that it was Stapleton who had murdered Charles and now was going to murder Henry. And that his sister was really his wife. The hound had Henry’s scent because Stapelton was the one who stole the old boot in London and was the man in the cab. He also said that Stapelton had told Laura Lyons that he would marry her. That is why she would not talk about it with Watson but if she hears that Stapelton has already got a wife she will talk. Watson wants to know one more thing. Why would stapelton do such a thing. Holmes does not know yet. When they are talking to Laura lyons and she hears about Stapeltons’ wife she tells the whole story how she had to write the letter for Stapelton and then not go. She did not know why but when she heard the next day she was told by Stapelton that if she said anything she would go to jail too because she had written that letter so she kept quiet. Then Watson and Holmes go to Baskerville Hall where Holmes sees the family portraits of the Baskervilles and he finds out that Stapleton is a Baskerville too. Stapleton wants the inheritance so he has to kill Henry too. Then Holmes and Watson make a plan. They say that Henry should go to Stapelton’s that night but that he must stay on the path. They also tell Henry that they have to return to London. So Henry goes to Stapleton’s house alone that night. Watson and Holmes go to the house with the police and wait till Henry goes home again. Watson looks through the window and only sees Stapleton and Henry. Then mist begins to appear. Finally Henry starts to walk home over the moor then a gigantic hound comes running through the mist. It is shining and fire comes out of its mouth. Henry yells and runs. There is a gunshot and another and the hound falls down dead. Holmes has shot it and saved Henry. Then Holmes and Watson and the police see Stapleton running away and go after him but Stapleton escapes. Watson finds Mrs Stapleton tied up in a room. She has been tied up by Stapleton because he did not trust her anymore. While Stapleton tries to reach his hideout on the moor, he falls in a pool and sinks. Holmes explains that it was Stapleton who had bought the biggest hound he could find and kept him in a secret hideout. He gave him Henry’s scent and when the time was right, Stapleton let the hound lose on Henry . Holmes caught him red-handed.
