The Eagle of the Ninth
Rosemary Sutcliff is the author of the book.
The title of the book is The Eagle of the Ninth.
Oxford University Press is the publisher of the book.
Marcus is a young Roman soldier who is discharged from the legions after an injury.
When he is recovered he wants to find out what happened to the Ninth Legion, who was led by his father and what happened to the 'Eagle'.
This is the symbol of the legion's honour.
During a gladiator fight, Marcus saved the life of a British slave called Esca. Together they go on their way to find the 'Eagle'.
They come in several villages to hear stories from those people. Then on a moment they hear somebody whistling a song, which was known by the legions. The man who was whistling the song was Guern. Marcus and Esca stay with him. On a morning when Guern was shaving himself, Marcus saw a scar under his chin. It was from a chinstrap of a Roman helmet. Guern was also in the Ninth Legion, only he survived it. Guern recognized the face of Marcus and then Marcus told him the story of his father and why he was here looking for the Eagle of the ninth legion.
On their way Marcus and Esca meet Dergdian and his men. And they stay with them. They discover that Dergdian and his men own the 'Eagle'.
When Marcus and Esca decide to leave they steel the 'Eagle'. Dergdian and his men were hunting for them. Marcus and Esca escaped and were not found. So they bring the Eagle back where it belongs.
Marcus and Esca are the main characters of this book. Marcus is a young Roman soldier who is discharge from the legion after an injury.
Esca is a British slave who lives his life as a gladiator. Marcus saved him in a gladiator fight. So Esca helped him to find the 'Eagle'.
It was an exiting book, because somebody could discover that Marcus and Esca were a Roman soldier and a British Slave that were looking for the 'Eagle'.
I should recommend the book, because it's so exiting and not too difficult to understand.
