Boekverslag: Het Osterman weekend
Publisher : Grafton Books
Pages : 205
Summary:
John Tanner, the main character in this book, is a news director. He and his best friends, the Ostermans, the Cardones and the Tremaynes are having a weekend party, but before this party someone of the CIA tells him they are all suspected Soviet agents working for Omega, a huge Communistic organisation.
From this moment, the nightmare begins, Tanner cannot know who are his friends and who are his enemies. When the weekend begins there is a heavy storm, and when Tanner goes outside to get something from the garden, he is being shot at, one bullet hits him in the shoulder, but the others miss him. After this moment the real nightmare begins, their dog got killed and they were shot at while they were stuck in the basement.
In the end, it turns out that the man from the CIA, who actually was a former officer of that agency, was really Omega, and he worked together with the chief of police, captain McAuliff.
John Tanner killed McAuliff and shot the fake CIA-man (called Laurence Fasset) in the knee so he couldn't escape, and Omega was unmasked.
When and where:
The story takes place in a small, very rich town, the date is not mentioned in the story, but it takes place in one week, from Sunday till Sunday, with the highlight in the ending weekend, when all the action takes place.
Main Characters:
John Tanner: A news network director. He is the main character of this book, but you do not know what his thoughts are.
Joe Cardone: Has connections with the Mafia, and has a banc account in Zurich, and is immensly rich.
Richard Tremayne: Is an attorney, and is good friends with Cardone, Tanner and the Ostermans.
Bernie Osterman: You don't actually get to know them well, only that they are good friends with the other main characters, and that they are Jewish.
Major problem:
Because of Laurence Fasset (the fake CIA-man) no one can trust each other, which leads to ridiculous situations, everybody is suspecting each other till no one suspects Laurence anymore.
Sort of environment:
The main characters are all rich and live in very big houses, and they all, except Tanner, have Zurich bank accounts, so they all have something to be suspected of.
Title explanation:
The Osterman Weekend refers to the weekend when the Ostermans come visiting and all the action takes place
Best part:
The first half of the book is a little confusing, but it gets better all the time, and the last part, the Osterman weekend itself, is the best part
Genre:
Thriller
Reality:
This story could have happened in reality, this is one of the reasons why is is so thrilling.
