Boekverslag: To Kill a Mockingbird
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee (1960)
Summary:
Scout (Jean Louise) and Jem (Jeremy) live together with their father, Atticus Finch, in Maycomb County Alabama. The mother of the family has died. Now Culprina, a Negro woman, has to look after them. They live in a little village in Maycomb County. It seems to be a quiet place, but in reality there's always something going on. For example, the son of the Radly family hasn't been seen around for quite some time. His name is Arthur but all the kids call him "Boo Radly". Many rumours go round about this boy. Some people even think that he is dead. One day Dill appears. He is seven years old and has come to spend the summer with his aunt Rachel. He suggests that it would be fun to try to make Boo Radly come out of his house. Most of the children in the village are scared of Boo who has been kept inside by his parents for fifteen years, because he was once arrested for a juvenile crime. Dill's plan of daring Boo Radly to come out makes him become a hero to his friends.
Scout has a bad time at school, because her father, Atticus, is defending a Negro called Tom Robinson. He is accused of raping a white girl called Mayella Ewell, who is bob Ewell's daughter. The people of Maycomb valley call Jem and Scout's father ? Niggerlovers?. This is a difficult time period for the two children. But they know how to handle the situation very well, except when Mrs Dubose tells the children that their father is no better than the "nigger" he defends. Jem cuts of the tops off all the camellias in Mrs Dubose?s garden. His father tells him to apologise, after which she makes him come and read stories to her every day.
On Christmas morning Atticus gives his two children an air rifle, but warns them to never shoot a mockingbird. When they visit Atticus' sister Alexandra, she disapproves of the way her brother has brought up the two children. She wants Jem and Scout to behave like a gentleman and a lady, and also thinks Calpurnia should leave the house. But Atticus doesn't agree.
Tom has to appear at his trial. Bob Ewell says that he saw Tom raping his daughter, but that the Negro escaped. Mayella has a right black eye which indicates that a left-handed man hit her. Atticus shows the court Tom's left arm. It appears to be shorter than his right arm and his left hand is shrivelled. In proclaiming that Bob Ewell is left-handed, he he is trying to prove that Mayella was beaten by her own father. Tom says that Mayella tried to seduce him that night, and that he was very scared and ran away. Atticus tells the jury that all people should have the same rights. The jury should not condemn Tom just because he is a Negro. Jem is sure that her father has won the case but she seems to be wrong. The jury declares Tom Robinson to be guilty of rape. If Tom loses his appeal, he will be executed in the electric chair, so he tries to escape because he doesn't believe he can win the appeal. During the escape attempt, he is shot, and dies. Ewell is glad of the Negro?s death, and in his opinion two more people deserve to die.
Bob Ewell loses his job and blames Atticus. Scout, who plays a part in a Halloween play falls asleep backstage and enters the stage at the wrong moment. She feels ashamed and is walking home with her brother, when suddenly they are attacked. A stranger comes to their rescue, but Scout cannot recognise him. It turns out to be Boo Radly.
Bob was stabbed by a knife, and Atticus thinks Jem did this out of self defence. But Sheriff Tate, knows that their rescuer was Arthur (Boo) Radly. To keep the shy Radly from become a public figure they agree to say that Bob was killed when he fell on his own knife.

Dertig miljoen verkochte exemplaren.
He is advocaat in Maycomb County, en moet Tom Robinson verdedigen.
Dill (Charles Baker Harris):

The book is not difficult to read.
Het verhaal bestaat uit 2 delen (Part one and Part two).
The first part (chapter 1- 11):
The second part (chapter 12- 31):

The book is not difficult to read.
Het verhaal bestaat uit 2 delen (Part one and Part two).
The first part (chapter 1- 11):
The second part (chapter 12- 31):
Opdracht:
for Mr Lee and Alice in consideration of
Love and Affection
Motto:
?That all Negroes lie, that all Negroes are basically immoral beings, that all Negro men are not to be trusted around our women.?
This is the way most men in Maycomb think about black people. These kind of people are pure racists and that's what this story is all about.
Another motto of the book:
Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.
