William Wilkie Collins was born in 1824 in London. He studied the law, but later turned to writing. He met Charles Dickens, whose close friend he became, and worked with him on several books. Collins suffered from ill health for most of his life and died in 1889.
Story:
Waltel come to visit his mother. His Italian friend grateful for saving his live years ago had a letter for him to apply for a job as a drawing teacher. To spent four month?s in Cumberland with a rich family teaching two young ladies.
On His way back he met a mysterious woman dressed on in white. After she left him in a cab man in a carriage inquire whether a police man had seen the woman, claming she had escaped from his asylum. Waltel leaves for Cumberland next day. At breakfast he met Marian Halcome who will be one of his pupils and who tells him a little bit more about the family.
When he met Mr Fairly he disliked him at once. He seams to be a week person who?s nerves can?t stand loud noises of son light he absolutely dislike children. Mr Fairly wanted that Waltel to clean op paintings.
After having discussed Mr Hartright?s meeting with the mysterious woman, Ms Halcome checks the letters she had kept from her death mother they identified the woman as being Anne Catherick when he meet miss Fairly for the first time he is truck by the compares sent with miss Catherick.
Weeks past in witch Mr Hartright falls in love with miss Fairly without telling her. He is deeply chocked when miss Halcome tells him she?s going top be married to Sir Percival. She asks him to leave. Then a distressing letter arrives warning miss Fairly not to marry sir Parcival. The letter is probably written by Anne. When Mr Harthright and miss Halcome investigate where the letter came from they accounted a boy who deems that he had seen a ghost at the grave yard. They find mrs Fairly grave stone wiped cleaned, although the grave yard keeper had been ill for sometime and there for unable to look after the graves.
When Mr Hartright returns to the graveyard in the morning he surprises Anne Catherick who?s visit missis Fairly?s grave. He wins her trust and she tells him she?s staying with Mrs Clements at a near by farm. He also learns it was Sir Percival who put her in the asylum. He tries to arranges a meting between Anne Catherick and Mrs Fairly. And he travels to the farm the next day with miss Halcome and discovered that they had suddenly left early that morning.
Mr Gilmore the family lawyer arrives at Limmerige House. Mr Harthright leaves in a sad mood. Miss Fairly gives him a drawing she had made earlier in the summer. Mr Gilmore tries to arrange a good marriage settlement concerning the money that is left with her after marriage inspite of Mr Gilmore?s efforts. Miss Fairly will not be able to leave some of het money to miss Halcome or others in case she dies before her husband. Mr Marian sir Parcivals lawyer determents that all of it well go to sir Percival. Sir Percival had many depths
Mr Hartright writes to miss Halcome that he?s going to Central America to examine the ruined cities in Honduras. Sir Percival decides to leave for Italy right after marriage to spent the whole winter in a more pleasant climate. On returning from Italy Marian and Laura are reunited. Laura asks news for Mister Harthright who she truly loves. They decide not to talk about het married live count and countess Frosco have joined them at Blackwaterpark. The count is a fat man who likes managing people and animals who seems to hold power over sir Percival.
Sir Percival wanted Laura to sign her name on a piece of paper without saying anything about its content. But Laura would not sign anything unless she had read it first. In the paper was written that if Laura dies her husband Sir Percival inherite all her money. So Laura refuses to sign.
Miss Halcome eavesdrops on the conversation of Sir Percival and Count Frosco. Laying underneath a window on the veranda roof. When it began to raining she became extremely cold and wet. Because she fell ill she couldn?t tell Laura the devious plans she have overheard.
Count, who sees Marian as a threat makes uses of her illness to unlock her up in a unused part of the house. Lady Glyde is told that she had left. The Count draws up complicated plan to have Anne Catherick, who is feathery ill, to changes places whit Laura. He gives Laura a drink witch sent her to sleep en has taken her to the asylum. Miss Halcome find out that Laura is locked up in het asylum and she gets her released by paying money. Nobody wants to believe that Laura is still alive. When Waltel came to the grave he sees two women to his deed astonishment he recognizes Laura and Marian.
In London they tell him everything that happens after Laura married. So Waltel decides to find out the truth. Waltel goes to mrs. Clements who was a former neighbour of Mrs. Catherick at Old Welmingham to make inquiries about the Catherick?s live. He ask the address of Mrs Catherick and went to see her, but she refuses to tell him anything.
Finally he discovers that Sir Percival?s parents weren?t married . Thus he can?t cleam to be a baronet. In order to destroy any evident?s sir Percival locks him self up in the Vestry of the church. In a attempt to burn the documents he sets the church on fire. He dies in the flames.
After the dead of Sir Percival, Waltel and Laura are free to merry.
Opinion:
I like the mysterious way of how its been written. It was a bit difficult to make a account of the book because its told by different main characters.
