Boekverslag: The Pearl
A poor pearl-diver family in Mexico lived a happy live, but one day the child, Coyotito, was bitten by a poison scorpion. Luckily Juana saw this and started to suck the red spot very hard and spat and sucked again. After this had happened the whole family ran to the doctor, because when a scorpion stings a little baby it?s most of the time deadly. But the doctor didn't want to help them because they weren't able to pay the bill. At that time Kino is very disappointed and he decides to search for a pearl in the ocean, to get money to pay the bill, so he leaves on his boat together with his wife and sun. When Kino prepares himself to dive he has a good feeling. And lucky him he found a very big pearl. He calls it the pearl of the world because it?s the biggest pearl he has ever seen. When he comes home he is even happier, because Coyotito has recovered from his bite. Although Coyotito was healthy again the doctor came that evening because he knew that they now had money to pay. Although Kino says that his son is healthy, the doctor gives Coyotito a medicine to "provide returning of the poison". The next day Coyotito is very ill. The day after the doctor comes and cures him by a drink.
That night Kino dreamt about all the things he could do with the money he would gain by selling the pearl. He dreamt about his sun going to school and about all the new clothes etc. So the next day Kino leaves to the village where a group of buyer of the pearl are waiting for him. But as they all worked for the same person they wouldn?t give a proper price. So Kino keeps the pearl with him in the hope to sell the pearl in the big city. Keeping the pearl was a big risk for Kino and that he noticed very well that night, that night a man came into their house trying to steal the pearl, Kino had heard this and stood up very quickly to stab the guy and that?s why the man ran away in the dark. The next morning Juana is trying to throw the pearl in the sea, but Kino prevents it and hits her. On their way back to their house Kino is attacked again and he kills a man and hides the body in the bushes. Very frightened they said to themselves that they had to flee that night. Until the evening they stayed in the house of his brother-in-law because someone had burnt down their house. When the night fell they said goodbye to their family and they left to the north to sell the pearl in the big city. Still was Kino very suspicious because he worried about they were possibly being followed by trackers. His suspicion becomes the truth when he saw them behind them on the path. Fortunately he had been smart enough to erase their footprints so it would be harder for them to find Juana, Coyotito and himself. Very fast they decided to go into the mountains. Kino always looked behind him and when he thought the trackers were to close he said to his wife that they had to hide in a cave. Kino knew that the trackers were here to kill the family to steal the pearl. So he wants to be one step ahead of them and he wants to kill them first. Very gently Kino walked towards the drinking and sleeping trackers and at the moment he wanted to strike, Coyotito started to cry. One of the guys had heard this and someone else told him that it was a coyote, but to be sure that is wasn?t really a baby that he had heard he shot in the direction of the cave where Juana and Coyotito hid themselves. When he had shot Kino heard the cry of death and he became very mad and he killed the three men. When Kino returns to the cave he sees his only sun lying in the arms of his wife with a bullet wound in his head. Juana and Kino return to their village and their Kino throws the pearl into the sea. He believes that the pearl has caused them all the trouble too now, but it's already too late.
The moral of this story is that money isn?t a condition for being happy.
I thought it was a good book and a very learnable book. The book was also very easy to read.
