Boekverslag: The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
This book is the book that belongs bef?re the Lord of the Rings. It is all about the young years of Bilbo Baggins, a hobbit of esteemed descent. It all starts when he gets a visitor, it's the wizard Gandalf. By his own supprise Bilbo agrees to an appointment with the wizard on wednesday and he is even more supprised when he finds 13 dwarves at his door that wednesday, together with Gandalf. They persuade him, also again by Bilbo's own supprise, to go with them on an adventure, as their burglar.
The adventure is actually most abouth Thorin Oakenshield, the most important dwarf, he is the only heir of the kings of the dwarven kingdom 'Erebor', the Lonely Mountain. Many years ago a dragon, named Smaug, destroyed that kingdom and took away all treasures. Thorin was then one of the few that could escape and now wants to go back, with this companionship, to defeat the dragon and get back the treasure. Also Gandalf has got the key from the secret entrance of the mountain. The way to it is long, verry long, and also verry dangerous. But the fellowship is willing to take all the risks, although Bilbo does have his doubts about it.
On their way to the east, they walk into a lot of danger. The fist of it are three trolls. Bilbo wants to prove himself but it turns out that Gandalf is the one that saves them by causing the trolls to argue till dawn, so that they will turm into stone. They take the little treasure of the trolls in which Bilbo finds a sword named 'Sting' that glows blue when goblins are around.
After being in Rivendell, a land of elfes, they go over the great mountains. When they get captured by goblins Gandalf is again the one that saves them, but they loose Bilbo on their way out of the caves. Bilbo, while seeking his way out of the caves, finds a magic ring. The ring turnes out to be from a creature named Gollum. Bilbo plays a riddle game with the creature, while that is wondering where his ring has gone, and wins it at the end just by asking the creature what's inside his pocket. (Which of course is the ring.) Bilbo gets away by putting the ring on, which makes his invisible, and following the hunting Gollum Bilbo gets to his friend again.
On their way further they get attacked by Goblins and Wargs (wolves), get saved by the Eagles, meet Beorn (a men that can shange into a bear) and get left alone by Gandalf when they get to Mirkwood because the wizard also has other businesses to do.
The way trough Mirkwood is very dark and dangerous, but fortunately the dwarves get more and more confidence in Bilbo. They defeat giant spiders but finally they all get captured by the Elves of Mirkwood who are not fond of dwarves. All, except for Bilbo. He takes on his ring and follows them, after a long stay inside he finally gets to free the dwarves by putting them in wooden barrels that go on transport at the river to Esgaroth, a place built on long stakes in the water were man live.
From there they travel to the Lonely Mountain and succeed opening the secret entrance. After a while Bilbo finds out the week spot of the dragon but doesn’t get the chance to use the information because one of the villagers of Esgaroth had already heard from it and kills the dragon with his bow while getting attacked by it. Bilbo and his fellowship get a fight with the man of the Lake Town because of the tressure now feft by Smaugh. They fast forget ther quarrel when Goblins and Wargs appear and fight together to beat the creatures. After winning that fight they are friends again and share the trassure with each other. Bilbo and his friends go home again.
J.R.R. Tolkien is geboren in Bloemfontein, Zuid-Afrika.
