Boekverslag: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
1. Motivatie
I chose this book for my book scription, because I already read it in the summer holidays. I read it then, because I read the four Harry Potter books in Dutch and I want to read it in the original language (English). So I read the four books in English and of all four I chose this one, because it?s the best book, I think. It?s a fantastical story, funny and a bit scary.
2. Beschrijving
It begins when the boy Harry Potter has a dream about Voldemort and Peter Wormtail who murder a Muggle (non-magical folk). When he wakes up his scar on his forehead hurts a lot. He writes his godfather Sirius Black about it, who is an escaped innocent prisoner on the run for the guards of the wizard-prison. The following day he gets a letter from the Weasleys, the family of his best friend Ron, that invites him for the Quidditch World Cup (the wizardsport on brooms and with four balls). They come to get him the next day, but not (as Harry hoped) with a car, but they travel with Floo powder (travelling through the fireplaces of wizards and witches) and they blow up the whole fireplace of the Dursleys (Harry?s mean uncle, aunt and nephew who really hates him and with who he had to spend his whole life, because his parents where killed by the terrific wizard Voldemort). At least they go to the Burrow, the house of the Weasleys and they go to the Quidditch World Cup. The night after the game everything is in panic: a few Death Eaters, followers of Voldemort, appeared and the Dark Mark, Voldemorts sign, also. Suddenly the whole magical world is in panic, afraid of Voldemorts return.
The next day they go to London, to Kings Cross station, perron 9 ?, where the train to Hogwarts School for Magic and Wizardry leaves. At school they hear about the Triwizard Tournament. In this tournament three magicschools fight eachother in three tasks. The other schools are Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. Of course everyone wants to be the representer of his school, but there is an age-limit of 16 years. By the announcement of the three partners of the game, Victor Krum is chosen for Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour for Beauxbatons, Cedric Diggory for Hogwarts and? Harry Potter. He don?t want to be in it, but he has to. Everyone is mad at him, because he find a way to cross the age limit, but he didn?t. The first task is to get an egg of a wild dragon in a cage. At the and Harry and Krum are first together. The second task is to free someone you love from the mermans. For Harry is Ron chosen. When he comes at the bottom of the lake, he sees that noone before him already freed someone. So he frees not only Ron, but also the other three, and with that he makes the mermans very angry. He don?t do the task well, but because he cared about the others, he still gets a lot of points and he?s still first with Cedric. The third task is to find your way in a magic maze. He and Cedric reaches the middle at the same time. The first one who touches the Goblet in the midst has won the tournament. They run to it, but Harry breaks his leg and Cedric doubts to win. Cedric takes Harry, because he saved him before, and they touch the Goblet together. Suddenly they are somewhere else and they see Wormtail, the servant of Voldemort. He kills Cedric and then a terrific ceremony starts.
Wormtail takes blood of Harry, bones of Voldemorts father and flesh of himself, but that together in a cauldron with what rest of Voldemort and then Voldemorts rise again. The Death Eaters appeares also and Voldemort wants to kill Harry. They duel with their wants, but a strange thing happens. Their wants get connected and the ghosts of the victims of Voldemort appears. Also Harry?s parents. They protect him and Harry can escaped with Cedrics body by touching the Goblet. The minister of Magic wouldn?t believe Harry that Voldemort returns, but Albus Dumbledore, the headmaster of Hogwarts do. He collects people he trusts and send them away. It turns out that the teacher Potions, Severus Snape was in the old days a spie for the good side by Voldemort. He wants to do this again. Dumbledore also takes other measures, so far as he can. The strange thing of the book is that the last chapter is called ?the beginning?. Because it?s the beginning of the return of Voldemort. Harry don?t want to except the money that he won in the Tournament, because he thinks it belongs to Cedrics parents, but they don?t want it either. At least he gaves it to the twinbrothers of Ron, Fred and George, who wants to begin a MagicShop. The book end with the philosophic words: ?As Hagrid had said, what would come, would come? and he would have to meet it when it did.?
3. Evaluatie
I think the book is pretty scary, especially the end part, when Voldemorts returns. The story is sometimes very funny, as the part when the Weasley blow up the fireplace or send the Dursleys a letter. The letter ends with ?hoping to see Harry soon, yours sincerely, Molly Weasley? as far it is normal. But the P.S. says ?I do hope we?ve put enough stamp on.? Uncle Vernon Dursley then shows the envelope to Harry and the book says: ?He held up the envelope in whick Mrs Weasley?s letter had come, and Harry had to fight down a laugh. Every bit of it was covered in stamps except for a square inch on the front, into which Mrs Weasley had squeezed the Dursleys? address in minute writing.? So the fact that wizards don?t know anything of Muggle things keeps getting funny situations. The language isn?t hard to understand, if you know the meaning of the ?magicwords?. I think that you have to read the other three books first, because you wouldn?t understand a lot otherwise. You wouldn?t understand why Voldemort hates Harry, what Dementors are, who Sirius Black is and who Wormtail is. All with all it is a really funny good-written book, even if it?s acually written for children.
