Wuthering Heights - Emily Bront? (1847)
Summary:
In November 1801 Mr Lockwood, a gentleman from the South of England, arrives at Thrushcross Grange in 1801 he visits Heathcliff at Wuthering Heights. A lonely old farmhouse on the Yorkshire moors. He notices the strange and aggressive atmosphere amongst its inhabitants, Heathcliff, Cathy and Hareton. Because of a snowstorm he is forced to spend the night at Wuthering Heights and he discovers a diary belonging to Catherine Earnshaw, dated 1776. He reads about the life at Wuthering Heights when Heathcliff was still young.
That night he is haunted by a little pale girl named Catherine Linton who looks like a ghost and cries that he should let her in for she has been lost on the moors for 20 years. He asks his housekeeper Ellen (Nelly) Dean to tell the history of the two houses. She tells the following story.
Old Mr Earnshaw, owner of Wuthering Heights, brings home from Liverpool a boys named Heathcliff who he treats like one of his own children. Catherine, his daughter, spends a lot of time roaming the Yorkshire countryside with Heathcliff. Catherine?s brother Hindley hates Heathcliff as he is a favorite of Mr Earnshaw.
When Mr Earnshaw dies, Hindley treats Heathcliff with contempt and humiliates him. Hindley has married and both he and his wife treat Heathcliff as a servant. One day, when Heathcliff and Catherine are looking through the windows of Thrushcross Grange, Catherine is bitten by a dog and she stays at Thrushcross Grange for five weeks to recover from her injuries. When she returns to Wuthering Heights she has altered a great deal and has become an elegant young lady.
Hindley?s wife Frances dies in childbirth and Hindley becomes an alcoholic and a gambler. Catherine tells Ellen Dean that although she loves Heathcliff she will marry Edgar Linton from Thrushcross Grange, as to marry Heathcliff would be beneath her. Heathcliff overhears this conversation and disappears. After looking for him on the moors Catherine falls ill and her recovery is slow.
After three years Catherine marries Edgar and she moves to Thrushcross Grange. Suddenly Heathcliff returns, he is prosperous and well-mannered. He goes back to live at Wuthering Heights where he gives money to Hindley who uses it to pay his drinking and gambling debts. Isabella Linton becomes infatuated with Heathcliff who is no longer welcome at Thrushcross Grange. They elope and marry, but Heathcliff does this only as an act of revenge against Edgar and Catherine. Heathcliff abuses Isabella terribly and finally she flees to London where she gives birth to their son Linton. Ellen Dean arranges one last meeting between Heathcliff and Catherine who dies while giving birth to her daughter Cathy that same night. Heathcliff hopes that Catherine will not rest as long as he is living and that she will always be with him.
Twelve years later Hindley finally drinks himself to death and Isabella also dies. Heathcliff goes to London and brings his son Linton to Wuthering Heights. Linton?s health is poor, and he has been pressured by Heathcliff to leave everything to him when he dies. Edgar Linton is now so ill that Heathcliff is able to arrange the marriage between Cathy and Linton and a short period after their marriage, Edgar Linton dies.
Cathy now owns Thrushcross Grange, and all this is soon followed by Linton?s death. Heathcliff now owns both Wuthering Heights and Thrushcross Grange. Cathy stays at Wuthering Heights, defying Heathcliff?s brutal treatment and tries to educate Hareton who has been seriously neglected by Heathcliff.
This is the situation Mr. Lockwood finds when he arrives in1801, but he soon gives up the tenancy of Thrushcross Grange.
When he returns in 1802 he visits Ellen Dean once again, who tells him the rest of the story. Cathy and Hareton became good friends and this made Heathcliff tired of life. His hatred has burned out he only wans to be reunited with Catherine. He locks himself in Catherine?s old room at Wuthering Heights and starves himself to death. He is buried between Catherine and Edgar and it is said that the ghosts of Heathcliff and Catherine
have been seen on the moor. Cathy and Hareton are making plans for their marriage, and decide to move to Thrushcross Grange after their wedding.

Emily Bront? was born in 1818 at Thornton, Yorkshire, and died in 1848 at the age of 30 at Haworth. She had two sisters (Charlotte and Anne) and one brother (Branwell). They were very close and at an early age began to create imaginary worlds. Both her sisters wrote poems which they published in 1846 as Poems by Currer, Ellis and Acton Bell which were their pseudonyms. Charlotte wrote many novels of which Jane Eyre is the most famous. Anne wrote two novels, Agnes Grey and The tenant of Wildfell Hall. Born of an Irish clergyman and a Cornish mother, the Celtic blood of the Bront? children asserted itself in haunting stories of enormous dramatic power. Wuthering Heights is the only novel Emily ever wrote, but has come to be seen as one of the greatest English novels.

Themes:
Passionate love, hatred and revenge are the major themes of the novel. All the characters in the novel are connected with each other by love and hate. Because of these violent emotions Heathcliff wants revenge on the Earnshaw and Linton families The novel is also about opposite emotions and worlds: love/hate, strong/weak, stormy/still. Perspective:
The story is told by two people, Mr Lockwood is the main narrator who he begins narrating the novel and becomes interested in the history of the people surrounding him. Their history is told by Ellen (Nelly) Dean to Mr Lockwood. Both narrators tell their stories in the first-person.
Time:
The author gives us exact dates. The novel starts in 1801, then describes the period 1776 ? 1801 and finally tells what has happened between 1801 and 1802.
Wuthering Heights can be placed in the Victorian Age. It is the great age of the English novel. While social and political elements become more and more important, close personal contact is destroyed by profit seeking, materialism and cultural uprooting. The authors want to go back to the Romantic movement, they want to run away from reality.
Setting:
Wuthering Heights stands high on the wild moors of Yorkshire, and is plainly and simply furnished. The occupants of the house and their way of living are rough, full of emotions, energy and passion. The contradiction is the other house, Thrushcross Grange, which is situated in a peaceful valley, untouched by the fierce storms. Its inhabitants are the same: non-violent, loving and indolent.
