Jane lost both of her parents in a fire when she was a little girl. She had to move to her aunt, and afterwards to a convent. She was very religious. She was closed, and had no real friends. At her 18th anniversary she got a job and went to live on her own. She wasn?t happy and had no friends. One day she met a men, James, which she fall in love with. They marry and go living in the farm of James with James?s father and a farm hand, Gerald. Close to the farm there is a cottage where Ellen lives. On the wedding of Gerald and Ellen, James?s father dies. Jane gets pregnant but she has a miscarriage. After this she has a depression and has to go an asylum. She gets better and can go home. Meanwhile Ellen is pregnant and gets a son. A few years later Jane is pregnant again and she gets a twin, Sarah and Catherine. Jane dies when the girls are 16.
Than the story continues when the twin is older and they live with their father in the farm. Both girls are not truly happy. Sarah has a relation with Peter, the son of Ellen.
Catherine wants to go to a monastery, but she is refused. This is because she is sick but she doesn?t know that yet. Sarah knows it and she has told that to the nuns.
Between Sarah and Peter there are some troubles. Sarah split from Peter, after she discovers that it?s her half-brother. Catherine gets sicker and can?t help anymore on the farm. The story ends with an epilogue where the sick Catherine is in her bed and her sister wishes her a happy Easter.
