Boekverslag: Go Ask Alice
Alice is in love with Roger, which she tells about at the very start of the book. Also she feels like she needs to lose weight, because she?s fat and ugly. Alice is very happy when she hears that she?s moving but when she?s at her new school she doesn?t manage to get any friends at first. But then she meets Beth, a Jewish girl, and she gets along very well with her. Soon they become best friends, but when Beth goes to a summercamp, Alice goes to her Gran, and there she meets Jill again, someone she knew a long time ago. At Jill?s party, Alice has her first try of LSD, because Jill has put it inside some of the drinks. This is the beginning of her drug addiction. Bill gives her drugs often, and they date. But then her Gramps has a heart attack, which makes her helping her Gran instead of going to parties. One night, Alice has sex with Bill, while stoned, but after that she thinks she might be pregnant. This makes her very depressed. Because of this she can?t sleep, and she gets addicted to tranquilizers. She gets off them when her period starts. When she goes shopping in a little boutique she meets Chris, who works there. They get along quite well, and Chris gets Alice drugs through her friends Ritchie and Ted, which Alice meets as well. When Ritchie gets too dangerous, they decide to run away to San Francisco, to earn money for their own shop. It goes well, but they decide to go back home for Christmas, also because Alice?s family is really missing her.. Alice?s family is very supportive, even though they don?t know anything about the drugs, to stay away from dangerous people, who want her to push again. Shortly after that, Alice gets stoned again, and gets addicted again. When Alice and Chris are at Chris? place, the police comes and finds them with drugs. They convince everyone it was their first time, and they believe them, but Alice is watched very closely now so she?ll never use drugs again. When she is high again, she ends up in Oregon. There she goes on using frequently again, and ends up on the street. Then she meets Doris, with whom she lives untill they?re out of drugs. When she?s back home, someone poisons her with drugs, and her parents send her to a psychiatric home. When she gets out there again, she seems to be on the right track. She gets friends again. At this point she decides not to keep a diary anymore. In the epilogue it says she died 3 weeks after writing this, probably of an overdose.
