TITLE
Smith is a boy who lives in a borstal school where they make him a long distance runner. He likes running in the morning because he enjoys being alone and he has the opportunity to think things through and make decisions.
THEME
In the book we can read the mind of a young boy who is growing up on the fringe of society among poor people who sometimes resort to crime on a small scale. On eof the thing he occupy in his mind is the fight between the in-laws and people like him, the out-laws.
SETTING
The action takes place in a Borstal school, a place where young criminals are reformed through training and education.

The story takes place in the late 1940s.

THE AUTHOR
Alan Sillitoe was born in 1928 in Nottingham, into a working class family. He worked in a bicycle factory before he started writing. He belongs to a group of writers who are called:
Angry Young Men. Their anti-heroes are disgusted at the world around them. They consider most people hypocritical and unnatural. Their language, like Smith, is colloquial and sometimes rough. Sillitoe writes about provincial life and the working-class world.

Sillitoe was geboren in Nottingham, aan werkende klassenouders.
