Boekverslag: Murder on the Orient Express
Murder on the Orient Express - Agatha Christie (1934)
Summary:
There is been a murder on the Orient Express.
Mr. Hercule Poirot, Mr. Bouc and Dr. Constantine investigate the case.
There are 13 suspects. After research Poirot founds out that there is one similarity between these 13 persons: they all have a connection to the Armstrong family, which suffered a real tragedy a few years ago:
Mr. Armstrong (a Colonel) en Mrs. Armstrong (the daughter of the actress Linda Arden) had a child. When that child was three years old it was kidnapped by a man called Cassetti. He asked ransom, but when the Armstrong family had given the money to him they only got their daughter?s dead body back.
In the mean time Mrs. Armstrong was pregnant again but by the shock of the discovery, that child was born dead and she also died .
Mr. Armstrong shot himself and their French nursemaid, who was suspected of some knowledge of the crime, threw herself out of the window.
Cassetti escaped with the money and changed his name into ?Ratchett?.
Ratchett was found in his compartment, stabbed with 12 knife-wounds, also a pipe-cleaner was found , a handkerchief and the broken watch of Ratchett, which had stopped at 1.15.
10 of the 13 suspects travelled in the Stamboul-Calais coach first class (same as Ratchett), the other 3 travelled second class.
The 13 suspects:
1. Hector MacQueen: was the secretary of Ratchett.
Turned out to be a man who always admired Mrs. Armstrong.
2. Pierre Michel: was a Wagon Lit Conductor on the Samboul coach.
Turned out to be the father of the French nursemaid.
3. Edward Masterman: the valet of Ratchett.
Turned out to be Colonel Armstrongs batman in the war and at the time of the kidnapping he was his valet in New York.
4. Mrs. Hubbard: an old American Lady, who had the compartment next to
Ratchetts.
Turned out to be Linda Arden, the mother of Mrs. Armstrong.
5. Greta Ohlsson: a Swedish lady.
Turned out to be the nurse the nurse of the kidnapped child.
6. Princess Dragomiroff: already confessed in the beginning to be the best friend of Linda Arden and the godmother of Mrs. Armstrong.
7. Countess Andrenyi: her Christian name was Helena Goldenberg.
Turned out to be the sister of Mrs. Armstrong.
8. Count Andrenyi
9. Colonel Arbuthnot:
Turned out to be the best friend of Mr. Armstrong, who had saved the Colonels life in the war.
10. Cyrus Hardman: he presented himself as an operative of the McNeil
Detective Agency in New York. Mr. Ratchett had asked him for help, because he knew that their was someone who wanted to kill him (he had had threatening letters). So Hardman slept during the day and stayed awake during the night to look if anyone got into Ratchetts compartment. Hardman said Ratchett had warned him for a small man with a ?female? voice.
Turned out to have been in love with the French nurse.
11. Antonio Foscarelli:
Turned out to be the chauffeur to the Armstrong Family.
12. Mary Debeham:
Turned out to be the one who taught the younger sister of Mrs. Armstrong (so Countess Andrenyi).
13. Hildegarde Schmidt: the Lady?s-maid of Princess Dragomiroff.
Turned out to be the cook of the Armstrong family.
(She felt into a trap of Poirot: He sad her that he knew she was a good cook.
She answered: ?Yes, indeed, all my ladies have said so?. But if you are a Lady?s-maid you don?t have to cook?)
So these 13 persons could all be the murderer.
Dr. Constantine established that the 12 wounds in the body were not inflicted at the same time and by the same persons.
So Poirot concluded that there were 12 murderers.
These 13 persons had all been part of the murder:
They had already talked about it years before, when Cassetti escaped.
They found out that his name was now Ratchett and managed that Mr MacQueen and Mr. Masterman would get into Ratchetts employment. So it was easy to find the right time and place to murder him.
The fact that the father of the nursemaid was conductor on that train was much gained, he could confirm that none of the passengers had left their compartment.
And the fact that Hardman told Poirot that Ratchett was afraid of a small man with a womish voice, made none of these 13 suspects, because they didn?t match to that description.
